Hikes: Ping Ding Old Canal Trail

A very nice, short hike away from the crowds of Yangmingshan.

There’s actually two ways you can walk this trail – one that is very up & down, made up entirely of stone steps.  The other is flatter, and along the canal itself.

To get there, take Bus S18 from Jiantan or Shilin MRT stations.  You get off at the very last stop.  **NOTE: There are two routes for Bus S18, be sure not to get on the one that terminates at the National Museum. More info about the trail here.

Once you’re on the trail, fairly early on you’ll get to a fork in the road.

  • Continuing up the stairs will take you towards Ping Ding Village.  At the top, you can turn left & continue the trail besides the canal. There’s a nice spot about half-way where you can sit on some rocks & have a break too.
  • Turning left & going down the stairs will take you along the bottom of the valley.  That said, you have to walk back up again too.

  1. Beautiful photos throughout your blog! I really recommend you visit Yilan County for some amazing nature photo-ops. We have some lovely hikes on this corner of the island.

    • Hi Mallory, thanks for the feedback on the photos. Yilan is definitely on the to visit list, along with a hundred other places all over the island. The hardest part is finding the time to get there in between study & enjoying life in Taipei … but I’ll get out that way eventually 🙂
